summary The key issues with which the people of Addingham are concerned do not all fit precisely within in specific Big Plan themes. Therefore the main issues which have emerged during the parish planning process are summarised below under the following simplified headings. Business Parking again emerged as a major issue; the business community would be keen to encourage more tourism and passing trade but there is an awareness that the present village infrastructure may struggle to cope with an increase in traffic. It was suggested that the car parking problem could be alleviated by making more use of various sites within the village which are currently perceived as under-utilised. Community Retention of the Village Post Office emerged as a matter of special importance to the community, along with the need for a more visible Police presence. The need for affordable housing in the village was identified, although it was acknowledged that this must be balanced against the importance of protecting the remaining green spaces. Emphasis was also placed on the need for co-operation and awareness between people of all generations. Involvement of all age groups in village projects and events such as the Gala, Church fete etc. were seen as a good way of working towards this. Residents were also keen to be kept informed regarding village matters, and means of facilitating this would be welcomed. Environment Recycling waste is something that the people of the village would like to do more of. To that end, a waste recycling point that can be easily accessed without motor transport is seen as a priority. Keeping the village attractive is seen as important; specifically, retaining and protecting green space; also eliminating eyesores, dog fouling and litter. Less reliance on car usage in general was thought to be a good thing. Health and Leisure In addition to specific ongoing issues such as replacement of the Scout Hut, a general need has been identified for better facilities for people of all generations to meet socially; also to take part in sports and other physical activity. The need for more sports facilities was a strong and frequent request from children and young people as well as older members of the community. Transport Car parking remains a contentious issue in Addingham, particularly the lack of short term parking close to the shops, which often leads to parking on both sides of the Main Street, causing traffic congestion. Inconsiderate parking due to lack of available space elsewhere in the village is also seen as a safety hazard, as are vehicles exceeding speed limits. Emphasis was placed on the use of public transport as an alternative to cars. integration between bus and train services needs improvement, whilst those who prefer to cycle would like to see provision of a commuter cycle route to Ilkley. |
